Who is in charge of your family's financial future? It may be you. It may be your spouse or partner. It's not a position you applied for and you may not even want the job, but ask yourself this: If I'm not taking control of my financial future, who is?

We are of the view that you have your own virtual business. A business that is in the business of managing money and you're the Chief Executive.

If you ever want to stop working and be able to live a life of some quality, you must become competent at running the show. You need the skills necessary to protect and grow money or to at least manage the people you've retained to do it on your behalf.

This is not a role that many are familiar with. Most have virtually no formal training and what's more, it's almost always performed on a part-time basis.

As with the traditional form of a business, successful Chief Executives carry with them common traits.

The business will benefit from having clear goals and good practices, such as regular reporting and risk management plans. You should expect nothing less.

Your role as Chief Executive is to be responsible for:

  • deciding on the overall strategy
  • asking relevant questions
  • keeping an eye on the big picture
  • setting objectives
  • allocate resources - people and money
  • interrogating the results
